Between Square Buttes is a 40-year look at the transitional change occurring in the American West. Started as a tribute to the last best place, it has become in the end a tribute to the end of the last best place.
Thirty-five short stories, fly fishing, bird hunting, lack of habitat, loss of land; but in the end, a tribute to the greatness that still exists.
Recently Square Butte Brittanys lost a couple of our oldest and best dogs, Tank and Zelda went to the great beyond. These two were the last of my old time Brittanys that go back 30 years, they will be missed in more than one way. They can never be replaced and now I face the 35 year dilemma of a whole new gene pool, resulting from the outcrosses since 1992 in and out of gene pool that is newer and better. I have every confidence that the new dogs are as good as the old ones, but they are not in the competitive arena anymore. I sell dogs to satisfied customers who praise my efforts, but the edge of competition is missing as of late. I Will always know the difference in the dogs, but no one else will, so it is fitting that I go the way of Tank and Zelda when the time comes.
